Revenues from the toll system installed by Kapsch TrafficCom in the Czech Republic grow by 10%: The Czech state collected around EUR 245 million last year

Toll revenues in the Czech Republic developed positively in 2008: In total, the Czech state collected around EUR 245 million last year with the toll system installed by Kapsch TrafficCom AG. This represents growth of around EUR 23 million - up ten percent year on year.

As the operating company of the Czech toll system, Kapsch TrafficCom drew up a balance sheet of the 2008 toll revenues in the Czech Republic at the beginning of this year. Development in the previous year was extremely positive with a total growth of EUR 23 million. The strongest month was April, with takings of around EUR 25 million. The last two months recorded a reversal in the trend, due to the reduction in economic growth. Erwin Toplak, CEO of Kapsch TrafficCom AG, underscores the economic importance of collecting tolls: "The income generated by our system allows the state to invest actively in the area of infrastructure. The maintenance and improvement of highway infrastructure places enormous demands on funds, which cannot be covered by the normal budget".

Main roads account for five percent of revenues
Tolls are currently levied in the Czech Republic on some 1,000 km of motorways and expressways, and since January 2008 on a further 200km or so of expressways. The requirement to pay tolls is imposed on vehicles of over 12 tonnes in weight. Plans exist to extend this requirement to vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes. A total of 370,000 on-board units are currently active in the Czech toll system.
